A former winner of Cruising World's "Boat of the Year, Best Inshore Cruiser", the Catalina 315 has all the core attributes that made the 445 and 355 award-winning yachts and has a bold emphasis on strength. The boat has a five-part structural construction to ensure a ruggedly-build boat that withstands the test of time. The hull is solid hand-laid fiberglass and the deck is cored with end-grain balsa, with solid fiberglass in high load areas. The watertight StrikeZone™ collision bulkhead is a below water impact absorbing chamber with a watertight collision bulkhead. The DeepDefense™ rudder system creates failsafe steering and the rudder has a molded –in leading edge to avoid the need for a vulnerable seam on the foil's vertical centerline. The T-Beam MastStep™ system allows the perks of a deck-stepped mast and the strength of a keel-stepped mast. The SecureSocket™ mast support and chainplate system facilitates perfect load resolution and watertight integrity. Knitted fabrics create a stronger laminate without additional weight. Trademark lead keels absorb impact for safety and require less maintenance than other materials.

On deck, the low profile cabin design has a sleek appearance and low windage. An internal flange hull-to-deck joint is capped with a slotted toe rail, and the wide deck design allows effortless movement, which is further improved by 27-inch high stanchions for added safety. The durable, diamond non-skid patterns adds safety and is a tried and tested deck surface. The sprit for the asymmetric sail is located and sized to ensure the tack is forward of the bow for utility and efficiency. The oversized traveler and winches ease sail handling in all conditions and the placement of the winches well-aft allows for single-handed sailing. The genoa has roller furling and the mainsail has in-mast roller furling. The cockpit is optimized for efficiency with ergonomically correct features and great visibility from the helm. The backstay is split to open up cockpit space. Additional pushpit seating is built into the stern rails. The instrument pods are in easy line of sight, both port and starboard. A large gull wing cockpit locker includes storage shelves for ease of stowing. The rudder is large to give a strong feel and an ability to turn in tight circles.

The boat aims for ease of maintenance. The newly designed navigation panel has additional circuits for added options, plus a built-in amp draw meter to monitor electrical usage. The central modular filter locker is easily accessible. Special hatches give quick access to the dipstick and for filling oil and coolant without needing to lift up the entire companionway.

Below are solid teak interiors and laminates, hand-finished with satin and high-gloss varnish. Quality fittings and hardware are recognizable, inside and out. The saloon area includes a large U-shaped seating area with varnished hand table. The extended settee opposite is long enough to be a further berth. The saloon table converts into an additional double berth and privacy screens are included over fixed ports. The galley includes solid surface countertops, a large front loading refrigerator with freezer compartment and there is space available for a second refrigerator or ice box. The stainless steel LPG stove and oven is gimbaled and includes cover over slides for additional counter space. The aft facing navigation table includes a laptop bin and AC/DC outlets. The heads include a shower enclosure and angled mirrored upper cabinet. Both sleeping quarters have innerspring mattresses and large hanging lockers which are cedar lined to reduce mildew. The forward cabin has additional storage with drawers beneath the bed, and the aft cabin has storage cabinets for clothes. The large hatch in the forward cabin provides natural light and additional ventilation.

Like all Catalinas larger than 30 feet, the 315 is robustly built to CE category A standards, is NMMA Yacht Certified, and follows all applicable American Boat and Yacht Council Standards.

Sailing her is a snap…The 315 exceeded expectations…Here indeed is a fun new design that puts the emphasis solidly on ease of handling and really good sailing qualities…when you go down below it is almost as though you are stepping down from the cockpit of a 31-footer into the interior of a 37-footer. I found myself in a true optical illusion…the effect is amazing… The dinette will seat four, the settee three, and you could certainly fit four or five more standing about the cabin. If the urge arises, you could happily host 10 to 12 friends for a party—not counting those who have snuck off to the forward and after cabins…. For a couple who cruises with friends, or a family of four, the 315 offers amazing communal space in the saloon and very livable private spaces in the cabins—all of which is pretty unusual in a 31-foot cruising boat. The 315 has a lot of features that make it a good cruising boat and that set it apart from the fleet. From the collision bulkhead in the bow to the seats built into the stern rails, the life of cruising sailors has always been kept at the forefront… The 315, like the rest of the fleet in the new Catalina 5 series, offers a lot of value in a very well thought out package. The boat sails well and is fun and easy to handle. It motors well and maneuvers easily around the docks. And, the interior living spaces are as large and commodious as you will find on any 31-footer. All the usual reasons for the spaciousness: more beam carried well aft, coach roof pushed forward trailer boat style, and plain clever design. There is argument-free room for extended cruising for four and weekending for six… The bathroom is a miracle of space efficiency, and that said it is also a generous size outright.
