The Catalina 275 Sport captures the pure joy of sailing in a simpler yet stylish boat. The 275 Sport was designed in response to direct feedback from customers who no longer needed big boats, but didn’t want to give up racing or day sailing. These customers were spending fewer nights aboard, but still wanted the ability to overnight, even if it’s an occasional trip with kids or grandkids. The 275 Sport was designed to meet these desires and exceeds expectations.

The Catalina 275 Sport is perfect for an afternoon out on the water with a few friends and is sporty and fast. The 275 has a modern, long waterline, and the beam is modest. The 275 can be trailered without the need for additional permits, vastly expanding cruising range. The hull is coupled with a powerful rig with large main and selftacking jib, which makes the 275 not only fast, but also super-easy to sail. The location of the traveler in the cockpit allows for singlehanded sailing. A retractable bow sprit increases sail plan options. Speed is increased because the hull itself is light and 40% of the weight of the boat contained within the keel. There are options for either a deep-draft lead fin drawing 4’5” or a winged shoal fin drawing 3’5”.

The cockpit is what the 275 is all about. The helmsman will become reacquainted with the simple pleasure of steering a well-balanced responsive boat with a tiller from the comfortable, ergonomically designed outboard coamings. The high aspect rudder provides a positive feel in the tiller. The cockpit seats are long with comfortable coamings. The helm seats are elevated for improved visibility. Folding drinks holders are situated under the mainsheet traveler. The molded toe rails aid movement on deck. Catalina's trademark diamond non-skid provides a robust and safe deck surface. A retractable boarding ladder is perfect for swimming. The open transom aids boarding from a dinghy. A large cockpit locker is located on the port side.

Accommodations below are suitable for weekending or just getting out of the weather. The galley includes a large drawer for a cooler, a sink, storage, and space for a removable stove. A separate enclosed head and basin allows extended day sails. The saloon table lowers to form a double berth. The single berth is aft can be used as additional storage and is big enough to hold a kayak or paddleboard. LED lighting provides a relaxing mood at night. Portable gear bags can be readily stowed by sliding onto racks behind the settee rests.

Additional safety features include Catalina's trademark StrikeZone™ impact absorbing chamber at the bow, hand-laid fiberglass hull, and one piece resin-infused deck for strength. The keel is lead for additional safety, weight and improved maintenance. The engine is located under the companionway steps for ease of maintenance.

Below, the Catalina is loaded with amenities that are unexpected for a boat this size… A unique feature I noticed are zippered stowage bags into which you can pack your clothing and necessities; they slide into tracks along the hull sides to form instant storage “lockers.” You can’t ask for an easier way to get your kit down to the boat or a neater way to stow it…  I can easily see myself spending a long weekend on the Sport 275 and because it is all so easy to manage… It doesn’t matter whether you’re trading up to a more comfortable platform, or down from a complicated cruiser; the Catalina 275 Sport seems to be hitting a sweet spot in the current market. I like this cockpit design. The long seats are sunk into the boat so that you have good backrest height without it protruding above the deck. But the helmsman position is raised and essentially on the side deck where the helmsman can sit outboard for better visibility. There is an anchor locker in the bow to port. Despite having “Sport” in its name, the Catalina 275 is definitely not your typical sport boat (typically a ballasted racing dinghy with a spectacular power-to-weight ratio and perhaps a tiny cuddy cabin to house the porta-potti). It also isn’t simply a scaled down cruiser with “private” sleeping cabins, full galley, pressurized water and all the rest.
